Hey Guys.
Bit new to this only 2nd year industrial design student but I was considering making one of these to have in the garage but was wondering how hard it would be to extend the z-axis (around 6") and if this would cause to much weight to be moved by the stepper motor; or cause it to be out of sync with the feed speed of the x and y steppers?

Have you got direct access to a laser cutter? If so, modding is a snap. We've got the files laid out in 2D, and have employed simple tab/slot joinery to allow for 3D assembly. If you know how to edit Bezier curves, you can elongate elements, add connection points, etc.
If this sounds a little abstract, you may want to build a stock version first. Once the first build is complete, you can use the tool itself to fabricate new panel pieces! That said, hardboard is not the most structural material. Though there's no absolute limit to the size of the machine, you may need to do additional engineering beyond simply scaling one or two elements. But hey - that's your specialization!

Yer i have unlimited access to a industry size laser cutter so cutting out the dxf would not be an issue. yes hard board isn't that structural, which is why i was considering exterior grade plywood for the more weight bearing components.
