Oh, and I am a glutton... I make clock movements out of wood with a scroll saw.

Hmmm, well, I don't have time for this project at the moment anyway. Maybe once I do, the hackerspace in my area will have its laser cutter! ;)

jeff-o, if you are a glutton for punishment, go with the scroll saw :)

seriously though, it's possible but the laser cutter does lend a lot of precision to the cuts.

Well, holes for bearings would be drilled with a drill press, so that wouldn't be a problem (assuming I have the right size bit!) But, it is indeed the wobble I'm wondering about. I could probably pull off 0.5-1mm deviation from a straight line, would that be enough precision?

Jeff-O,

There's no reason why an elite scroller couldn't cut out these parts. Inconsistencies from the cut may introduce wobble into the rig (but most joints have a lot of contact area, which should help with the issue). There are also a couple of snap-fit-tolerance holes for bearings you'll have to work some magic on.

In short, we'd love to see what you come up with. Keep in touch with pictures if you take the plunge.

Just as the title says - is there a certain amount of precision granted by laser cutting that this machine requires, or can I get away with using (elite) scroll saw skills?
