@Taylor, Sure, go ahead and distribute -with our name of course. I put meta tags on the FlickR photos anyhow... and they're liscenced as creative commons (or should be by default)! Thanks!

@ALL,

So we have everything working. Here are photos on FlickR: http://www.flickr.com/photos/darrel_ronald/sets/72157625822258783/

And two videos are being converted (as I write) with our first cut run!
http://vimeo.com/architectureopenform/videos

We'll post more images & videos as we go through the tests!

@ALL - Canadian Builds

We're almost done our build! I've been testing the X,Y and Z movements today! We're working out the configuration of the EMC2 and how to locate the 0,0,0 location of the steppers versus the cutting board. In the end we've gone with the non-Pro HobbyCNC kit because it was causing problems. We'll hopefully have some cutting tests produced this week, and then post some images and videos.

We've also updated to Ubuntu 10.04 + EMC 2.4 instead of the older release of Ubuntu 8.04. Another modification we did was to house the driver board in an old UPS box (google images for Uniterrupted Power Supply) which has metal housing and is therefore fire-resistant. We've created a small room for the machine, but will have to work out a cover for the excess material flying around.

Well, turns out a ballpark for all 7 sheets is $800 plus shipping. They also said a laser cut would be a lot sharper for this material (masonite). $800 is too rich for me. (Dang - it sure was sounding good there for a while).

@Taylor - Thanks for the caution. Sadly, NWWEDM confirmed that the quote was for sheet #1 only. Whatever software they're using evidently doesn't do layers. I'll see if I can bust it into seven separate dxf files (unless you already have each sheet broken out?).

All,

This sounds great! One thought: Some users have been having trouble accessing the layers within our CAD files. You may want to check one more time that this company isn't charging you for only a fraction of the total number of panels. If the price is indeed for the whole set, I don't think you'll find a better deal anywhere.

@gjbloom, yes, in theory it would be possible. You'd probably need to extend the Y-axis to allow for the cutting of the x-beams. You'd also have to account for the radius of the cutting bit by blowing out the interior corners of all the cuts, like this.

I received this quote from NorthWest Wire EDM for waterjet-cut panels in 1/4" Masonite:

Gregory,
Sorry for the delay, I have Mondays off. The cost of your batch of parts will be $125 plus shipping. FYI, the cost would drop considerably if you ordered 3 or more sets, since most of the cost is in handling! 3 sets would cost you about $225 plus shipping. Let us know what you think. Lead time is about 2 days right now.
Thanks for the opportunity to quote your parts, Eric, NWWEDM 509-893-0885

Anybody else want to go in on a set?

Does anyone think it would be possible (or likely) that a design could be created to allow one DIYLILCNC to cut the panels needed for a new DIYLILCNC?

I've always been happy with the price and service from Canada bearings http://www.canadianbearings.com More then other bearing suppliers. Even http://www.motionindustries.com located down the street from me. My problem with motion industries has only been billing and shipping problems, but most of these problems are related to the company i work for having many departments and locations. So check out both companies before you buy.

cheers.
